The first stage of seekingGood is to, individually and collectively, determine the nature of Good. To do this, we need to establish a knowledge base consisting of (1) information regarding current events (“news”) but also (2) guidance for our theoretical concepts best gleaned from those who have come before us. Below is a list of resources of both types. The list is dynamic, changing as new sources are discovered and as certain sources are deemed to lack usefulness or unreliability. Please comment freely on the sites you visit, helping to vet them for others who seek to use them. (NOTE: The sites listed below, although somewhat left-leaning, are NOT all from the same socio-political perspective. (for instance, Breitbart is included). As always, read critically!)

The Associated Press is an independent, not-for-profit news cooperative with teams in over 100 countries. The AP focuses on the world’s stories, from breaking news to investigative reporting.

Democracy Now! provides “access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S.corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts.”

Mission: To expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions, using the moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing.

truthdig! is dedicated to reporting on current issues that are insufficiently covered by mainstream media. The website’s mission is to dig beneath the headlines, provide expert reporting and commentary and offer an outlet for original work by exceptional journalists.

Founded by abolitionists in 1865, The Nation is America’s oldest weekly magazine, serving as a critical, independent voice in American journalism and a platform for investigative reporting and spirited debate on issues of import to the progressive community.

CPI: The Center for Public Integrity was founded in 1989 by Charles Lewis. We are one of the country’s oldest and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative news organizations. Our mission: To serve democracy by revealing abuses of power, corruption and betrayal of public trust by powerful public and private institutions, using the tools of investigative journalism.

Focused on Washington, DC, Public Citizen is a non-profit “people’s lobbyist” organization, which concentrates on actions of the Congress, energy, global trade, health research and litigation.

“The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is an independent, not-for-profit media organisation that holds power to account….We pursue in-depth investigative journalism to inform the public, with no corporate or political agenda. Through fact-based, unbiased reporting, we expose systemic wrongs, counter misinformation and spark change.”

The site mission: “Account of such considerable things as have arrived unto our Notice, including … the truth about power.” With veteran managing editor Bill Moyers at the helm, the site presents relatively balanced reports of current events. In addition to the main site, there is also a blog.

POLITICO is a global news and information company at the intersection of politics and policy. With publications based in Washington, D.C., New York and Brussels – and continued expansion into various state capitals in the United States – POLITICO has one of the most robust and rapidly expanding roster of journalists covering politics and policy in the world.

PoliticusUSA is fiercely corporate-free political news and analysis staffed by White House and Congressional credentialed journalists and a Reuters publishing partner.

PoliticusUSA is 100% minority owned and deliberately out of the beltway.

RT presents an international news channel founded in 2005. “RT creates news with an edge for viewers who Question More. RT covers stories overlooked by the mainstream media, provides alternative perspectives on current affairs, and acquaints international audiences with a Russian viewpoint on major global events.”
